The garden at 431 Jersey Street: The assignment was to take
a 20-foot by 70-foot backyard that had been abandoned for decades and create a landscape that complemented my newly-restored 1912 Edwardian row house. The idea was a classic Arts and Crafts cottage garden with tall hedges that reference the intimate walled gardens I love so much in London. Sometimes, one of the most important things you can design into an urban outdoor space is privacy. It includes a raised lily pond, custom rose arbors, a shade garden and densely-planted perennial beds.
